Currency conversion cost calculator

See what a card payment or cash withdrawal abroad really costs you, and how much more you pay if you accept the machine's offer to charge you in your home currency.

1 foreign unit = ? home units.
ATM operator fee plus your bank's fee.
Applied if you accept being charged in your home currency (DCC).
–
Cost if you decline conversion–
Cost if you accept conversion–
Extra cost per year (declining)–
Saved per year by declining–

Extra cost = what you pay minus the same amount at the mid-market rate with no fees. Some cards waive the foreign transaction fee when the machine converts; check your card's terms. Example values are illustrative.

Paying by card or taking cash out abroad has a cost that does not appear as a line on your receipt. Your card provider converts at its own rate, often with a margin, your bank may add a foreign transaction fee and the ATM owner can charge a flat fee. Worse, many machines and shops offer to charge you in your home currency, a service called dynamic currency conversion, at a rate that is usually much worse. The calculator above adds all of these up.

How this calculator works

Every time you pay or withdraw cash abroad, the real cost is more than the fee on the receipt. The exchange rate you are given usually includes a margin over the mid-market rate, and your bank may add a foreign transaction fee, plus a flat fee from the machine’s owner. This tool puts all of them together and compares two cases: declining the conversion (your card or bank converts) and accepting the machine or shop’s offer to charge you in your home currency. It runs entirely in your browser and does not store or send what you enter.

  1. Enter the amount in the foreign currency and the mid-market rate.
  2. Enter your fees, your card’s margin and the markup the machine or shop would apply.
  3. Read the extra cost per transaction and per year.

If you are a freelancer, see our guide on hidden currency conversion fees when getting paid, too.

Worked example: withdrawing 200 dollars four times a month

Assume a mid-market rate of 1 USD = 0.92 EUR, so 200 USD is worth 184 EUR. Your card has a 1% margin and a 1.5% foreign transaction fee, and the ATM charges 3 EUR.

  • If you decline the conversion: 3 EUR + 1.84 EUR margin + 2.76 EUR fee = about 7.60 EUR each time (4.1%).
  • If you accept the machine’s conversion at a 6% markup: 3 EUR + 11.04 EUR = about 14 EUR each time (7.6%).

Four withdrawals a month means roughly 365 EUR a year in extra costs if you decline, and about 309 EUR more on top of that if you accept. A card with no foreign transaction fee and a bank-owned ATM can bring the first figure close to zero. The numbers are an example; enter your own card’s terms.

Frequently asked questions

What is the hidden cost of a currency conversion?

The difference between the mid-market rate and the rate you actually get. It does not appear as a fee on your statement.

Why compare declining and accepting the conversion?

Machines and shops that offer to charge you in your home currency usually apply their own, worse rate. Choosing the local currency lets your card or bank convert instead.

Are the results exact?

No. They depend on the numbers you enter, and real rates, fees and terms can change. This tool is for education and comparison, not financial advice.
